Best way would be checking the best suitable charset in a (configurable?) list, going from US-ASCII to the various ISO-8859-x sets. If you plan to support chinese/japanese users and such, then also UTF-8 should be one of the choices. Anyway, even the ability (as in 1.5.5b2) to choose the charset in Locale prefs (or, better, in Newsgroup pref!) could be enough for us... If you want some expert people to help you decide the best way to implement this thing, I'd advice asking in news.software.readers.
