Hmmm, so why not simply using tftp? The kernel won't be completely recompiled 
just because changing the contents of some single object files.

But one could just insert a few byte tertiary bootloader, which will never 
change, reversing that or does the old bootloader catch that?

Modules will do.

using dd if=kernel of=/dev/xxx does exactly the same. on desktops like on the 
pad itself :)
