He is right that it isn't necessary most of the time, but you should test your
printer without it, just in case it doesn't work properly.

What is most likely happening (assuming it is the HP software) is that the HP
software that monitors your ink and paper levels in the printer scans all the
USB ports and when a new device connects it may grab the USB port temporarily
and thus HotSync can't grab the port to detect the Palm.

The Palm's are notorious for once they fail on the initial 'ready to sync'
message, they never resend it (most devices will retry a few times before
stopping).  This means that if the HP software grabs the port and checks to see
if it is an HP printer and tries to pass the port back to the system for other
software to detect, HotSync likely misses the initial sync request and thus
never starts.

Try closing or disabling the HP crapware that runs on startup. I have found that
most of that stuff is unnecessary to basic operation of the printer.
