You may color me puerile if you wish, but I am in good company, such as

You're missing my point; those programs are installed - and often
running on startup - whether you need them or not.
 
One of my "ministries" is speeding up slow-running computers; nearly
every PC that I have worked on has unnecessary printer software running
on startup (along with Adobe Reader, Quicktime and several other
badly-behaved applications). Sometimes I find software for printers they
got rid of years ago!
 
Rarely-used functions have no business running on startup, particularly
as they can be run as needed. Running XP in  <512MB with a system tray
that takes up half the taskbar is a recipe for a slow-booting and
slow-running machine.
