I have Sheet and Word installed to SD and save files to SD.  Never had this
issue.

Simple Stupid question  :-)  Are you sure the lock tab is not on for the SD
card.  I did do this once months back and drove myself half crazy  until I
found it.  Second suggestion would to be run fsck on the card.
