MSP430 or AVR best for audio digital filters?

[This is my first post here ... hope it works OK!]

I am looking at either the MSP430 or the AVR to use for some basic audio digital filtering - max 10kHz audio.

Is either processor clearly the winner here?

[ 8-bit versus 16-bit; clock speeds; instruction set; MUL opcode; MAC ability; addressing modes etc etc.]
