I don't know if there's a written standard. I've never done any CAN other than 
install a system on a boat. The "backbone" was only 20cm long consisting of 5 
Tee connectors branching off to peripherals, and two terminators. The data rate 
was 250kb/s (NMEA-2000). The way i did that installation was as detailed in the 
instructions for the equipment.

I know everything down to the protocol level about how CAN works and have 
thought of using it in some products.

If the data rate is high and there's a lot of peripherals connected to one 
point, the combined capacitance or transmission line reflection effects of 
cables going to the peripherals could make the data at the central point of 
connection a bit noisy. Keeping the cable lengths to the peripherals short would 
help.

Apart from that, i'd be confident it would work if i did it myself.
