I tried the small (SOT-23?) tvs devices intended for CAN bus and their tops=
 would just get blown off :-)

I then went to 600 watt TVS diodes but the shoot-through was still enough t=
o damage the driver. =20

Then I went to (on each line, outside to inside) Bourns  75 volt GDT to gnd=
, Bourns TBU in series, TVS to gnd.  Since my data rate is so slow I wasn't=
 worried about the capacitance load.

This worked better but I am now using:
=09ADM3058EBRIZ-RL Isolated driver &
=09RFMM-0505S Isolated 5v/5v DC-DC converter

This should be good up to ~4,000 volts.  Just now started testing in the fi=
eld.  Unfortunately too late for the peek of the storm/lightning season.

I wondered about using magnetics instead of the TBUs but I don't have any e=
xperience in that area.

Yup, I have my head down.  Won't even watch news until tomorrow.  It's like=
 most breaking news stories - they have to talk to fill the air time even t=
hough they do not yet have facts :-)
