lircd lockup on raspberry pi

When I build the latest version from source, and run "irw" I do get a
reading from the first button pressed on the remote, but then lircd
consumes 100% cpu, and is  unresponsive.  No more buttons are reported
by irw.

If I kill lircd, and restart it, it works again, for just 1 button press.

Using lirc version 9.0.0 there is no problem.

Has anyone seen this?
