Eventually I found documentation on the "default" driver, which says that it works with anything that the kernel supports... which of course includes basic UART serial ports. Probably www.lirc.org/html/table.html should be updated to list "default" as the driver for these homebrew thingies. The real problem was in /etc/lirc_options.conf on the "device" line. I had to replace "/dev/lirc0" with "/dev/lirc1". I figured this out by removing and reloading the lirc_serial module, and noticing that that dev went away and came back.
