Hi Ben,

I think this odd behaviour may not be the problem of your code.
Most likely it is related to the hotplugging system or the HID
driver. I have experienced quite some problems when dealing
with PICDEM FS USB (CDC demo) and PICkit 2 (HID) under Linux.

Maybe libusb mailing list or linux-usb mailing list is the
 place to ask for help.
