KiCAD grows less terrible each year. I find its PCB layout to be fairly
tolerable ever since CERN poured a lot of money into it a few years ago. I
recall being impressed by its support for copper pours. On the other hand
the schematic and library stuff still feels a bit clunky to me. I would use
it for hobby stuff with no hesitation.

Give it a try, you only have to learn it once.
