I'm looking for a text editor with basic editing ability that can handle
RTF and text files and which can remove CRs from CRLF line endings.
I use several word processors for appropriate tasks but want something that
meets the need better. Bells and whistles get in the way.
Rapid loading desired. Usually use on a "use and close mode" per file.
Multiple open copies desired.
eg word processors usually have multiple open files in the same single
instance. Swapping using eg Ctrl-W, menu select, is available but is slower
than Alt-Tabbing as desired.
I usually use in a "DOS box" mode (with 'batch file' calls ! :-) ) as
decades of familiarity make this usually faster than a mouse/GUI
environment.
Being free would be nice.
A modest one off payment would be acceptable.
I have used Wordpad (!!!) for decades but it is apparently going to be
literally removed from Windows updates by Microsoft some months from now.
A substantial bonus would be the ability to convert lines ending in CRLF to
LF only. ("Linux format")
The reason for this is that I import / paste material from programs which
Wordpad converts to CRLF format and adds spurious "double spacing" in the
process.
I can remove these by several means but all involve an effective RTF - text
- RTF translation which removes information. If I want to remove CR's I
need to 'process' only part of the files, which is undesirable.
I'm aware that the world is awash with fancy high capability editors.
A quick look around does not suggest an obvious easy choice. (Too much
choice probably :-) )
Notepad++ does many nice things BUT does not allow "non text" enhancements.
Suggestions invited.
