I second UltraEdit, even though price has gone up. Nice features are hex view and column mode. UltraCompare is bundled with it, useful. Wanting to do a one-off upgrade I wasn't paying attention and accidentally updated to a subscription licence. Renewal price has increased too much for my liking (couldn't see the value... what fundamental new features can you add to a text editor, year on year?), so I tried to revert to my old perpetual licence... no joy. Compelled to purchase a new licence. Plan to not upgrade for a long time. Tip for non US customers: hidden surcharge of 10% (allegedly for currency exchange) for anything other than USD, but can switch to USD.
