I've been using microemacs (sometimes refered to as uemacs) for over 35 
years. It is very easy to use and has powerful features if you choose to 
dig deeper. The "learn and repeat" (macro stuff) is simple and awesome. 
The only real let down is UTF-8 support although I remember reading 
somewhere that Linus (yes that Linus) has upgraded uemacs to support 
UTF-8.

Many of the editing commands are the same as those used by the BASH CLI 
(even the full blown EMACS).

It is VERY fast and "search and replace" works across line bounderies.

The last time I tried to edit files with CRLF on a linux box the CR was 
displayed as a ^M which was easy to remove with the "search and replace" 
(you can go the other way if you need to).

Switching between spaces and tabs is also trivial (using entab and detab 
of a marked section). An you can quickly change the tab setting from 8 
columns to anything else (e.g. 4 or 2) when looking at someone else's 
source. Combining this with entab and detab allows you to very quickly 
convert quicky column alainment to tabs without a lot of messing about.
