That seems believable that temporarily running at 200% of rated torque would be frowned upon. I actually have a 1/3 HP 3600 RPM 3-Phase motor that I am modeling a piston pump to attach to it. Is there some rule-of-thumb for appropriately derating this scenario? It's rated for half a foot pound of torque full load. I can imagine that even cyclic variations from 100% or even 50% of rated full-load torque to 0% will be hard on it due to vibration and force on the shaft. Looking through the motor catalog, I really don't see very many ratings that seem applicable. There is probably a design guide out there someplace.
