A fly wheel helps, but one the motor can get going is of a rapidly limited size.  Like a lot of things it's part of the solution, but completely solving the problem that way isn't practical.  Elipttical pulleys/gears could help, but it's messy to make work and to design, plus in anything other than huge quantity the NRE alone from any company willing to sign on is going to be steep.  Amusingly this is one of those problems that could be helped by hydraulics and an accumulator perhaps, but they hydraulic pump, depending on type adds it's own problems.  Not to mention the loses conveting electricity to hydraulic power, the design difficulty, etc. make that not a useful solution in all but the most important/valuable situations. Of course using an air motor to drive the compressor.... SYSTEM LOAD: 1849!!!
