I try to get in position at least 30 mins prior, with the storm an hour or more away. Setting up the gear takes a few minutes. Past that, it's largely up to the storm. I've seen them dissipate in less than 5 minutes, or make sudden 90 degree turns, Dropping height takes them from jet stream steered to low level wind steered and there's usually some shear. They can also ramp up in intensity quickly. I've seen storms where you would swear it was literally midnight, in the middle of the afternoon. I've seen hail big enough to kill cows. I've seen storms with echo tops higher than 70,000 ft. The storm acts, and I react. When it's past, I can still get good shots, and I'm hoping for some sprites and jets at some point.
