Happy new year all!

I don’t recall when I joined the piclist, but my microcontroller journey
started with the 16c84 which required no (expansive to me, at the time) uv
eprom eraser. All assembler because that was free. One of my two initial
mentors - a woodshop teacher and an orchestra teacher who were together in
charge of the theater technical crew - indicated that it would be too hard
for a high school student to design a digital light dimmer. I spent a good
bit of time understanding and implementing a simple phase controlled dimmer
in assembly and finally got it mostly working one night, though I never
showed it off to either of them. Back when digikey’s “-ND” suffix meant
something.

We are spoiled today, but I can imagine that those who played with vacuum
tubes in their teenage years felt the same in their own time, and each
generation has similar experiences with complexity and knowledge.
