I had fun designing something similar but different. See attached. Requirement was for either 2 or 4 x AAA cells. The uC runs on unregulated supply when idling (MCP16262 bypasses input to output when disabled and consumes only 1uA, reverse polarity circuitry a couple more uA's). Boosts to 3.6V on uC request (reg then takes 4uA? or more while running). Load was some 10's or low 100's of mA for 20s or so to drive some LEDs before disabling reg and switching back to idle. Ok down to I think 0.8V per cell.
