Works for me.  Isn't that supposed to be the main strength of Java- 
cross-platform compatibility?  Same issues as on Windows.  Get a java sdk, 
grab javax-comm and get it set up, download the TINI sdk, and go to work.  
Issues different on Linux are permissions on the serial port devices.  The 
javax-comm docs detail how to deal with this.  And no, the solution is NOT to 
always do everything as root.  Used it on RedHat 7.3, 8.0, and Fedora Core 1.  
No problems.
