Yes, its voltage was 1.1V

I would download code to the board and disconnect it to place it in another location for data collection.

After disconnection I would lose all my code and would have to reload everything back. Changing the battery seemed to help.

Nothing, the battery is out of the circuit if its voltage is less than the system voltage from the AC adapter. It is used only for backup in absence of AC power.

How do you know the battery is low? Have you measured its voltage?
