Hi Steve,

Yes, generally this stuff takes some time to get up to speed.  My
experience is with an open-source RTOS that is probably overkill for
what you want. 

In order to suggest something, how about a little more information:
1) What specific board do you have? 
2) What software do you have at the moment?  Just CodeWarrior?

Did your board come with any documentation?  Generally they have
examples to work from.
