RE: Queued SCI with Interrupts on MPC555

Hi Alfonso,

Okay, I see. I follow you now. You are using wrap so don’t need to keep
setting the QTE. I don’t use wrap so I will have to keep setting each time I
fill the queue.

Thanks for your help,

Dave

Hi Dave,

When you start a transmission you have to set the QTE Bit.

Let say you have 20 bytes to send.
Before activating the QTE you put 16 bytes into the transmit-buffer.
Then you start the transmission (QTE=1)
Now the hardware dictates what doeing next.
After the first 8bytes was send the hardware sets the QTHE bit an raise an
interrupt.
Your handler now have to determin which segment of the buffer to fill up.
During this procedure the hardware continues to send the data in the other
buf-segment.

So you don't need to set the QTE again !

Bye
Alfonso

Hi Alfonso,

Thanks for the response here.

It looks like you’re doing pretty much everything the same way Allan and I
are:

Set the QTSZ

Set the wrap bit

Clear the interrupt flag QTHE or QBHE

Load queue with data

……………………., no Set QTE?

You don’t set QTE in the ISR? How do you get it to transmit?

Thanks,

Dave

Hallo Allan,

please take a look into the following code...
In this you will find a fragment of my implementation of the interrupt
handler and the send function (WriteUartN).
Here you will see only the function for sending data ..

Note: The WriteUARTN function when called, check out if there is a send
pending, if true it waits.
And you will find this "gQueuePointer = ((char *) buf) + chunk;"... For
timing reasons we decided to avoid copiing data again. So we take only the
reference of the buf, which is normally not recommended. gQueuePointer (and
gNumberDataBytesToSend ) is a global variable which in turn is accessed by
the Handler.

Hope you will get a better understanding of the subject matter.

Bye Alfonso

Hi Allan,

Thanks a million for the help here! I was looking for confirmation that I
wasn't going mad. So I DO have to set QTE each time. I have rev 15 of the
users manual and I can't find a single place in there where it says I'm
suppose to set QTE every time I load the queue. Well, I figured it out
through experimentation.

Yep, your code looks close to mine. Except I was setting the wrap bit,
that's a mistake I'll bet. I'll try it with out it.

Thanks,

Dave

I sort of said this in my larger mail, but just want to point out the
documentation DOES say that QTE gets cleared, so it is necessary to set it
again each time. It is not spelled out in the register description, but it
is shown at the bottom of the 'Queue Transmit Flow' diagram.
There should be no need to set TE again.

Allan

Hi Alfonso,

Yep, I've studied Chap 14.9 extensively. I'm using the quickstart package so
appconfig.h has the necessary config items in it, and these get loaded into
the control registers by QSCI_INIT command. That part seems to be working
okay. I can load the queue with 16 bytes and kick off a transmission by
setting QTE and TE, the 16 bytes go out. Then I get a QBHE interrupt. I
clear this interrupt in the ISR, set size back to 16, load 16 bytes in the
queue again, and after that I get unreliable results. First of all, nothing
will go out from this ISR unless I set QTE and TE again (the need to do that
is NOT mentioned anywhere in the documentation). I get intermittent results
now, sometimes it transmits another 16 bytes from the ISR, sometimes not. I
can't seem to get a combination of code that works reliably.

Suggestions?

Thanks much for your help,

Dave

Hallo David,

Two years ago I implemented Queued SCI which musst be implemented with
interrupts.
The code works well with the MPC555 and MPC565 and we are using it right
now.

The code is based on the description in the users-guide for MPC555 Cap.
14.9. In the documentation you will find some flowcharts that helps but...
it is not so simple to let it run... since (as I remember) you have to set
some registers in the *.cfg or in the startupcode that are not described in
the chapter.
