GMD flash driver examples

The GMD driver examples include lots of operations including ones on shadow rows and censor bits. I would presume that these are all included just to demonstrate how each function is used. But just to verify, I will ask.. is it a general recommendation to perform all these operations when the goal is to just program the arrays? 
 
What is the minimum recommended set of operations just to program the main arrays? For a system that does not use shadow (looks externally), will FlashErase, FlashCheckShadow, FlashProgram be sufficient, or should there be explicit operations to set and clear shadow, and set and clear censor bits as in the demo?
