Here are a few drivers for the OpenBrick. They should work in XFree 4.2 and 
4.3. I am using on a daily basis the XFree 4.3 driver to play video with 
mplayer (I use OpenBrick to view Japanese TV from France - one OB in japan 
encodes the signal and another decodes it in France).

Regarding VLC, it should work but probably less efficienctly than mplayer. 
The next OpenBrick which is being readied should be fast enough for that.
