Don't forget that Ethernet (100 base-T) is faster than USB anyway, so you're better off without an external drive and just mapping a drive from a computer. Ethernet should get you about 7-8MB/sec of throughput, but USB 1.1 is only about 1.2MB/sec By a "NAS drive" he's referring to a type of special purpose computer that you just plug into power and into your Ethernet network (assuming you have one) and it shares it's hard drive space on the network.
