VLC and audio streams

Of course, the Roku plays WAV and MP3 just fine, but I'm considering ripping
my classical collection into ogg or flac. So I've been trying to use VLC to
play these. The problem is (mostly) volume. I've ripped using CDex and all
four formats play fine with winamp. With VLC, WAV and MP3 are ok/reasonable,
volumewise, but ogg is very faint, and flac doesn't play. I've been using as
the command vlc --volume 1023 file_name.

Is there something I'm missing?

As for flac, I get no "Audio Path ... SUCCESS" message. Since VLC 0.7.2 on
Windows doesn't play flac either (the "where am I?" slider moves through the
file very quickly), maybe I shouldn't be suprised.
