Your experience regarding power failures is exactly the opposite of mine.
When we get momentary power interruptions (also frequent here), all the
network devices except the NSLU2 reset automatically, and are fully
available without manual intervention (except the AudioTron).  With my
NSLU2, I have to go to the wiring closet and press the button on its face to
make it present the drives to the network.  Linksys tech support has written
me that this is the way the device is designed and it cannot be changed
because the requirement to press the reset button is built into the
hardware.

I am running the current Firmware:
  Date : 8/3/2004
  Firmware Version : 2.3 Release 25
My NSLU2 has required manual reset on all firmware releases.

Have you found some method to cause your device to gracefully and completely
recover from power interruptions, or does it just happen to work differently
than mine?  The only difference I see between your configuration and mine is
that I now have two 120G Maxtor external drives.

Another problem I have had is that the NSLU2 claimed each of two previous
new Maxtor 300 GB drives I had attached were unable to be written to and
unable to delete existing files.  This happened after quite some time, and
at random intervals for each 300 GB drive.  Reading existing information
from those drives was OK, so with hours of file transfer, I was able to
recover the music files to another drive.

There are no Linksys diagnostic tools available to investigate the failure,
and Linksys tech support said that the new Maxtor drives had definitely
failed.  Maxtor is the preferred drive brand for Linksys, and the two
companies have a cooperative marketing agreement for the NSLU2 and Maxtor
drives, so it should not be a drive incompatibility problem.  Also, each
drive worked for quite a while before spontaneously becoming read-only.

Because of the file system required by the NSLU2, the drives could not be
troubleshot by a separate PC.  As a consequence, I reformatted each drive
under Win XP Pro, as NTFS, and the process reported both drives error-free
and no problems with the drives.  Both drives have worked perfectly ever
since, under Win XP.  I am anticipating the same inability to write to the
120 GB drives sometime in the future.

It is my guess that the NSLU2's file system had become corrupted on the 300
GB drives, making them APPEAR to be read-only.  This was not evident in the
permissions or attributes presented to Windows.  Maybe someone familiar with
the NSLU2's file system can shed some light on the phenomenon.
