I have one of my four ATs fed toslink into an RCS (tactaudio) going into
Odyssey monoblocks into two axiom 80s. That probably about 40x the price
of an AT in gear ;-) Tried also analog oversampled to 96k but toslink is
better (albeit leaner sound). Some of the MP3 is not listenable (Chopin's
nocturnes even ripped with paranoia setttings), some of POP things
sound like CD.
WAV I cannot distinguish mostly from a NAD 540i CD player that was 3x
its price
unless very, very subtle HDCD recordings (organs).
Overkill, nooooooo, just a tad overengineered to get decent sound out of
it ;-)
Another setup I have in the kitchen
is smaller axioms (t3) with a decent 19" amp (kind of like
smallest bryston) and that sounds very, very good analog unless my fridge
switches on and off ;-)
And yes, it feeds of a 1TB RAID5 linux server ;-) Works great, even
wireless.
I hope they make those audiotrons again, it's great gear for a great price.
Ogg and something like FLAC support would be nice though.
