Many thanks to Stan & Konrad for their valuable advice.

This all coming back to me now.  It's been several years since I sorted
through all this before.  It's the sample rate - not the bit rate that
governs whether you'll get a digital output signal.  Most of my low bitrate
TR streams were sampled at 22 KHz or less, so they would be too low to make
the 32 KHz cutoff for digital out.

Thanks too for the link to the AT specs.  That's worth it's weight in gold!

It turns out I get a perfectly fine analog out via the headphones jack!  All
my TR streams - regardless of sample rate - play perfectly clear out the
audio jack

So guess what the root problem was?  My son had left a 1/4" --> 1/8" adapter
plugged into the headphones jack, since he generally uses his iPod
headphones when he uses this jack.  As the specs page points out, when the
headphone jack is active, the rear analog out signal is muted.  I suppose if
both the digital & analog out were muted when the headphone jack is active,
we would have noticed this problem sooner, since we make very heavy use of
our livingroom AT but primarily for streams of 32 kHz or greater, so we
aren't paying much attention to the audio out.

Thanks again for all the assistance and for helping me to troubleshoot this
problem!  In the end, is was something almost as trivial as checking the
volume setting.
