Ditto, and I'd recommend to check the headphone output.  The headphone
output on the front and the analog output on the back are connected.  Do
you use the headphone output a lot?  Maybe something is bent inside.

As for what is sent through the S/PDIF digital output: it's not the
bitrate that matters, but the sample rate.  Only 32 kHz and 44.1 kHz are
supported by the digital output.

Though bitrate and sample rate are two different things, there usually
is a relation: eg. LAME automatically resamples 44.1 kHz (CD) input to
32 kHz for target bitrates lower than approx. 100 kbps, and to 22.05 kHz
when the target bitrate is lower than approx. 70 kbps.
