Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to share our latest open-access paper ‘The Home as an Active Caregiving Partner: Scaling Zero-Interface Audiovisual Connectivity for “Aging in Place” with Dementia’, which explores the architecture of passive, zero-interface smart home systems designed for dementia care and aging in place.
Access Link: https://www.mdpi.com/2073-431X/15/6/353
Core Contribution:
This work presents a local-first, privacy-by-design architectural blueprint built entirely on the ESP32-S3-BOX-3 hardware stack. To alleviate the cognitive and physical burdens of traditional interfaces on individuals with dementia, we deployed and evaluated a zero-interface system over a 10-month field study. The framework utilizes local passive acoustic monitoring, voice-activated bilateral audiovisual streams, and edge AI pipelines to maintain strict data privacy without relying on persistent cloud storage.
Key Topics Covered:

  * Zero-interface AAL (Ambient Assisted Living) architectures.
  * Edge hardware implementation using the ESP32-S3 microcontroller.
  * 10-month longitudinal field study tracking passive caregiver-to-home interaction.
  * Privacy-preserving local audio and video routing frameworks.
We hope this hardware blueprint and empirical deployment data offer practical insights for those working at the intersection of Assistive Technology, Ubiquitous Computing, and Family Informatics.
The full paper is freely available to read and download via the link above. We welcome any feedback, discussions, or potential collaboration opportunities.

Best regards,
