Herb,

I¹m glad you asked this!

Being in the creative recruiting world for over 16 years, the one thing I
hear time and time again from hiring managers, whether corporate or agency,
is that students need to have a good understanding of business and,
especially, marketing. Design for arts¹ sake is irrelevant in the business
world; instead, design needs to address a business strategy, usually
marketing or communications related. Without a good grasp of business,
designers will just be making pretty pictures.

I find I will be taking over the capstone classes in my departments
Graphic Design program. We are a smallish generalized program, at the
moment, on the verge of a major overhaul.

The question: What, in your opinion, should an undergrad student have
in their mental toolkit as they exit a graphic design program?

Any advice from this group would be appreciated!
