I can only speak for myself and a few other people, but we got out of this field because of the lousy way we were treated. I and two other interaction designers whom I've worked with each have over 14 years of experience as interaction designers. The last several jobs each of us had were with software companies that: 1) didn't want to pay market rates for our expert-level talents; 2) had non-designers micromanaging our work (news flash: project managers with MBAs and software engineers do not have the last word on what it takes to create great user experiences); 3) worked us nearly to death (courtesy of absurd deadlines handed down by those project managers who knew nearly nothing about user experience or interaction design); 4) had entry-level designers making decisions that were undercutting the overall effectiveness of our work (hey, they're cheaper, why not get them that much more experience so we don't have to hire expensive senior people); 5) mismanaged the projects so badly that cost- and time-overruns were virtually guaranteed. When the pendulum swings back and I see companies respecting the role of interaction designer again, I'll return. In the meantime I'm perfectly happy working as a college instructor and tech writer.
