This diagram is fantastic, it combines business drivers (credible, desirable, valuable in the center) with user needs (useful, usable, accessible). A note about the U word: Since I came from a design background, I didn't have the benefit of learning "user centered design" by the book. So I always just thought that the term really meant "making things that people want and can use" - sort of common sense. It's only semantics I suppose, but it seems like a shame that "usable" means "passed usability testing" to so many people (and implies all the baggage behind user centered design). I had always thought that "usable" was a trait of a system arrived at by creative design based on a thorough understanding of the audience, not the result of a technical process. Creative common sense, not science. Then I learned about the practice of user-centered design and usability testing. The reason I mention this, is the "findable" section of the diagram. I know Mr. Morville's practice deals with a lot of large taxonomies and information architectures, so it's appropriate from that perspective. However, I think it would be equally appropriate for "findable" to be subsumed under "usable", if the latter word didn't have the overly specific connotations associated with it. - Abel L.
