Isn't a big part of the question "what"? what is findable/usable.

A findable site has little to do w/ a usable site.
A findable site is one where the site itself can be found.
A usable site is about a site that can be used, but you are already there.

A findable object on teh other hand that is already part of a site,
seems to me to be more akin to usable. HOwever, I do agree w/ Peter
that findability properties specific to an object may not be relevant
to the usability of the processes used for finding that object.

I.e. different objects in the same system will have different
qualities of findability. But the search engine, display methods, etc
are all the same, no? The search engine is directly related to the
usability of the system, but the object properties relates to the
findability.

Of course if "nothing" is findable, then the most usable system is not
all that useful.

I don't think we should think of these are absolute buckets, but as
affinities of gravity around creating value for the stakeholders
involved.

Karl,

I'm not sure that usability/findability and competence/skillfullness are

parallel. For systems where it's important to make that progression

from novice to expert, I would add or swap in a hexagon for

learnability. And I'd look closely at the learner-centered models from

folks like Elliot Soloway:

Yes, excellent job.

I think Abel raises a valid point regarding findability.

I¹ve often thought about usability being divided into two areas,

competence and (for want of a better word) skillfulness. In other words

once we have a system that helps people achieve competence with a system

we then need to help them become skillfull. Skillfull might not be the

right word, maybe its autonomy or learnability but it gets to the

fundamental point that usability is not a binary, it is a scale that

goes from competence to mastery.

It seems that findability is, in this case that higher plane of

usability? Thoughts?

Anyway, thanks again for the thought leadership Peter.
