Hi Abel, Thank you for identifying the distinction between learning and using.. as I did not make that clear. So I went back and read the user testing session material, and while not identified in that material as either learning or using... it was clear to me that learning was the primary obstacle. Now some of the more experienced users, did remark that the treeview was far to dense and that the drill down was almost endless. But I would say that learning was the real difficulty here. I would like to follow up further on the idea of animation as an assist to the user - as I can see that making a difference. thank you susan ----- Original Message ----- From: Abel Lenz To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, August 16, 2004 9:25 AM Subject: RE: [AIGAExperienceDesign] Treeviews and project trees.. Is it that the users find the tree view difficult to use, or just difficult to learn? It may still be appropriate to stick with a slightly extended learning curve if the tree view turns out to be the most efficient and comfortable interface in a situation of regular repetitive use. The usability of a tree can be affected by very subtle differences in function and behavior. Increasing the hit area of line items and open/close controls is very helpful, even by 10 percent. Also, if possible, animating the transitions between the open and closed states of nodes of the tree will help users maintain a sense of context. Animation is especially helpful in mitigating the negative affects of the click target moving after it's clicked (for instance, when collapsing a branch). Cheers, -Abel - Abel L. Hi there.. does anyone know of some good resources on the design of treeviews ? This is a topic that I am dealing with in a design for an application that the users are finding too difficult to use - as they are not technically inclined. They find the tree structure far too confusing. What alternatives to a treeview do you have experience with and found customers were comfortable using? What has been your experience with the icons used in treeviews..are they a help or a hindrance? any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks susan [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------ Yahoo!
