not sure if this is meant to be an example of what to do or what NOT to do. it's been awhile since i changed my Yahoo preferences, but my memory of it is that it was a cumbersome, confusing and most inelegant process. the idea is good, but the implementation is awkward.
on a very simple, appearance-only level, take a look at:
http://www.csszengarden.com/
... the same content presented in a wide variety of visual styles. pick one you like.
The much bigger issue is how to allow users to control more of the experience than its visual presentation. i'm interested in learning what other people propose as "rules," while remaining suspicious of them in general. sure, "less is more." some of the time.
sometimes more is more, as it should be. the challenge is to choose what's appropriate for any given project.
my current challenge is trying to figure out how to bring more human warmth into the cold, mechanical environment of information presented via the computer. i've put a few experiments at my still-under-development site: www.awdsgn.com/44113 - definitely NOT rules for anyone to follow.
