The usual solution is to purchase a copy of Adobe Acrobat Exchange (not the 
reader). It includes both the printer driver that can easily produce PDF 
files from within most other applications and the Distiller, which reads PS 
files and converts them to PDF (and allows a lot more fine-tuning of the 
output).

There are some other applications (mostly from Adobe) that are bundled with 
the print driver, an online subscription service from Adobe ($10 per month 
in the US and Canada) and a few other third party creators, but they 
generally allow you less control than the full product.
