Many thanks Trent & Jan for the suggestions. I both renamed the ppm4.log file and ran sudo ppm from the Terminal and then reinstalled the module I'd problems with and this time there were no error messages in the PPM console, and there were entries in the ppm4.log. There doesn't seem to be any change though in perltoc.html as there's still no entry for the new module but I hadn't renamed that file. I'll have to try that to do that now but as I'm just going away for a few days it'll have to wait until I return. You should be able to just delete these files (or maybe rename, to be on the safe side). When you then install another package using PPM these files should get re-created with the proper ownership.
