Komodo will use the system environment variables, which means they are 
inherited from the environment Komodo was started in, i.e. the desktop, 
command prompt, etc...

You can also view/customize these Komodo environment variables through 
Komodo's preferences - in the "Environment" prefs category.

Perhaps the reason for why these environment variables are persisting is 
that you've customized them in Komodo's preferences?
