I appreciate the recommendation, but I'm not impressed with Hackos' previous
work. I'd rather hear from the classification experts on this list.
However, I would like to hear feedback from others on Hackos' work in this
domain.

You might (and others as well) want to read Joann Hackos' excellent "Content
Management for Dynamic Web Delivery." Don't be put off by the
overly-specific title (or utterly aful cover art and text illustrations),
it's really a great treatment of the implementation of complex
classification systems. She doesn't mention faceted classification, although
her methods are basically FC. The book includes several solid case studies
and an entire chapter on making the business case for complex classification
schemes in general; you could certainly start with that to talk specifically
about FC.
Best,
Andrew
