This is a topic I have put some thought into so it is all in my head.
Sorry, no references. I'm not aware of any software that allows you to 
do this, but I have not spent a lot of time looking for it so it may exist.

The problem may not be too difficult if the software is designed to help 
a human user (information designer) to manage a set of facets. The 
software could suggest facets to the information designer and notify 
them of new facet values as the underlying dataset changes.

A high level logical view could be:

Dataset --> auto-classifier --> manual facet management --> information 
design --> user interface
