Thanks, Fred, that was helpful, but set me off on some further thoughts, 
while I was cycling into Bournemouth this morning!).

I wonder if it is not more akin to a phase relationship (if that term is 
still used), and should be indicated by a notational relationship, rather 
than being fitted into a facet structure. It seems analogous to the 
'influence' relationship, in that /potentially/ the symbolism can be drawn 
from the whole classification scheme and applied to the whole scheme 
(although the topics studied tend to be drawn from the Arts, or Religion, 
or Psychology).

Some of the types of symbols are: astronomical bodies, metals, plants & 
animals (even things like eggs), chemical processes, social processes, 
mythological figures, and they are studied in literature, paintings, 
engravings, music, religion, psychology, medicine, gardens, architecture, 
social processes, mythology etc.
