What I understand is that you are not talking about the symbolism OF an 
object or process, but rather the object AS symbol. In that case, symbolism can 
certainly be considered a relationship: "X 'is a symbol of' Y". Essentially, that 
allows anything in the classification to serve as a symbol of anything else. 
It is an interesting challenge to think about, that's for sure.
