Hi Melvin Thanks for sharing your Nursing FacetMap sample. I enjoyed reviewing it. Here are a few simple tricks to improve efficiency. 1) STRUCTURED ORDER. You want each of your lists to be in some kind of structured order. Obviously this makes it easier to find the topic of interest. It also gives your site the feel of an organized system. Alphabetical order is the default. However you can also use another method, such as chronological, which you used in your date group. BTW you might want to consider reverse chronological order for that area. 2) NECESSARY LEVELS. Each level should have at least two choices. For example, Nursing Functions has two subheadings – Administration and Nursing Care. However, Nursing Care only has one subheading – Nursing Intervention, which also has only one subheading – Illness Treatment. Your client must go through three levels to arrive at the needed information. Each level has the same 152 documents, so you only need one level. 3) EFFICIENT LABELS. Several of your subject areas use the same word in all their facets. For example, in Nursing Specialties, each facet ends with the word nursing. Since the overall label for this area is Nursing Specialties, we already know that each facet is a type of nursing. Just use the specialty as the label, i.e. Obstetrics, Nephrology, Surgery, Psychiatry, etc. If you also put the facets in alphabetical order, you will have a highly browsable list. In addition, eliminating 17 uses of the word nursing gives you more room on your page for other information. There are also some areas for improvement that relate to the FacetMap design. 4) NAVIGATION TRAIL. FacetMap indicates the navigation trail at the top of the page. That’s good. However, in the actual area where you chose a subject, they only use the label of the first level. For example, the trail to Professional is Nursing Functions > Administration > Professional but the actual choices for Professional are labeled as Nursing Functions. This is confusing and erroneous since the label does not reflect what is labeled. BTW, suggest you change Professional to Professional Staff. All facet choices include the word staff. That's 7 word repetitions that could be streamlined. 5) SERVE YOUR CLIENT. Each subject area in FacetMap begins with the word Browse. This is a confusing addition to the structure. I am assuming it is there to create a unified look-and-feel for all FacetMap browsing structures. However the absolutely most important thing is to make the structure as easy as possible for the client to use. For improved efficiency, I’m suggesting that FacetMap develop another technique to create a unified look. For example, they could create an overall heading like “Browse a FacetMap.” Thanks again, Melvin. You’ve got a great start here. I have built a prototype nursing faceted classification for my Uni research project using FacetMap. DemoName: NursingSample At present I have only assigned about 20 resources but will be gradually increasing to about 500 and more if the facetmap demo system allows me too. I am hoping that would help to show the capability of the structure to reduce the information overload and increase information/knowledge discovery through the various facets even with the ever increasing content. I would appreciate it if you'll could review it and pass me your comments or email me if you have any queries. I would like to know if you think its good or bad or any comments at all? I am hoping to improve it through your various comments /insights /opinions etc. Hope to hear from you'll. Thank you in advance for your comments.
