Re: FacetMap: Question About Using XML Data

Rock n Roll Art.  What fun!  Thanks Todd.  I organized the Ralph J. Gleason 
LP collection for the Bay Area Music Archives.  He was popular music critic for 
the San Fransico Chronicle during the 1960s.  So I actually have a subject 
specialty.  
 
You requested feedback on the classification.  Here are a few things to 
consider about the structure.
 
CLASSIFIED ORDER.  Consider putting lists into some sort of order.  The 
alphabet does not have to be constraining.  Your main focus is Phish.  Put them 
first in Bands, with Phish Side Projects in second position, then the rest in 
alpha order.  

This arrangement demonstrates your excellent musical taste and lets visitors 
know the focus of the classification.  It also makes it easier for visitors to 
find bands that are not Phish.  Scanning an alphbetized list is faster than 
reading every single item in hopes of finding that one obscure band you're 
looking for.     
 
It might be interesting to list Venues by size.  Presumably art for a club 
gig is rarer, since fewer were produced.  This gives you added value from the 
arrangement.
 
OTHER AND MISC.  I never use words like Other, Misc and General.  If 
something is important enough to be in the collection, it is important enough for a 
category or a real label.  Consider using Souvenirs instead of Misc in the Type 
category.  
 
In the Artist category, what is the criteria for being listed as Other?  The 
Other category now includes poster artists with 3 and 4 items, while artists 
with only 1 item get their own categories.  In addition, you have listed 
Stanley Mouse as Other.  Stanley Mouse!  He is one of the most famous rock artists 
and one of the originators of the genre.  He is definitely not an Other.  
 
Of course, if you give each artist a separate category, you are going to have 
a long list.  So you could show the most important artists (most famous, most 
hits, etc.) on the main page.  Then use the word More to encourage the click 
and list all of the artists in alpha order on the next page.
 
DESCRIPTIVE LABELS.  My preference is to use the label to describe the 
contents rather than to actually list them.  One of your labels is Official/Fan.  
How about the term License Status? 

I built a taxonomy for a warehouse of licensed Snoopy products along with 
Charles Schulz characters and many others, including the Beatles.  So I’m 
surprised the condom in Misc Type is unlicensed.  It was produced by a commercial 
enterprise and was for sale.  Usually this kind of item has a copyright line 
somewhere in the small print.  BTW I also organized an inventory of condoms and 
safe-sex devices for the Alameda County Health Department.  Don’t get to brag 
about that one very often.

The problem I'm having is that I can't seem to access the "lowest" (i.e. 
last) selected "heading" using the XML data. As you'll see, in the "Your 
Selections" area on my site, I've been using the placeholder "Some 
Selection" for this value.

P.P.S. If you are viewing the source code, I apologize for the horrendous 
table-filled layout. I'd love to convert the site to a more modern XHTML / 
CSS front-end but the site traffic simply doesn't make the effort 
worthwhile.
