Viewpoint (SCOPE OF FC LIST) Was: Defining basic vocabulary of faceted classification (TERMINOLOGY)

Responding to Aida Slavic's concern ["It may be useful to state the
functions (or functional requirements) for which facet analysis is used."]

I would describe the overall domain of functional requirements to be
discussed here as retrieval from document collections and other
applications -- for example, identification and retrieval of software
modules in order to leverage reusable code. (See Prieto-Diaz' work.) For me,
"documents" are instances of information, whether they be books, emails,
images, or multimedia presentations. A "document collection" might include a
library or the whole Web. (My personal interest is document collections
within organizations.)

So I would describe the topics to be covered in this list as:

1. Design and modelling of faceted classification schemes, independent of
specific tools or interchange standards -- including how different designs
might meet different requirements. (This seems to correspond to the
terminology "facet analysis.")

2. Indexing ("faceted indexing"?) -- by which I mean the application of
terms in a faceted schema to "documents".

3. Discussion of tools and interchange standards used to implement and apply
such schemas -- including how particular tools might be more or less
appropriate for specific requirements.

4. Discovering and discussing methods of reducing the difficulty of both
design and indexing, including (a) application of automatic categorization
tools and (b) sharing of schemas.

5. And, out of pure curiosity, identifying other approaches to
knowledge/information organization which reflect the principles of faceted
classification, even if proponents of those approaches are unfamiliar with
the formalities of faceted classification.


As a consultant, I also have a strong practical interest in how to make a
compelling case for using faceted classification in organizational
environments.

Others may be more interested in theory, which is also perfectly acceptable
to me ... even very useful at times.

Let me stress that this is my personal viewpoint. I'm not trying to exclude
other topics. I encourage others again to introduce themselves and express
their interests.
