Does the Mugabe regime's survival rest in the hands of graphic designers?

This may amuse. I belatedly came upon news reports in the Los Angeles Times (USA) and The Guardian (UK) from 24 July, about an emerging threat to the Mugabe regime. Their state printers of banknotes had just had their German supply of watermarked banknote paper cut off, and the printers were also getting worried about the licensing status of the "GS" software suite from Jura JSP GmbH that they use to design the Zimbabwean banknotes. You may be aware that Zimbabwe's inflation rate now tops 11 million percent, the regime depends on securing the loyalty of the army by trucking fresh banknotes round to the barracks, and every few weeks the graphic designers at Fidelity Printers in Harare have to come up with a new set of banknote artwork. Is political power now coming from the button of a mouse? See my blog "the Conradiator": http://conradiator.wordpress.com (Sorry for shameless plug, but if David Sless can get away with it, so can I.) :-) Conrad -- ___________________________________________________________________ Use the following address to post a message to all subscribers: [email protected] To subscribe, unsubscribe or change your options, visit: http://list.InformationDesign.org/mailman/listinfo/infodesign-cafe For all Information Design matters: http://InformationDesign.org Problems?
